How AA Works — This Alcoholic Would Rather Be Happy Than Right — Glenn D., Orlando

I have been in the same apartment, with the same wife, and had the same program of recovery since January, 1993. And I am happy in the same apartment, with the same wife, and the same program of recovery since 1993. Why? Because AA works; consider why . . . When I had been in AA only a short while, an old timer told me something that has influenced my life ever since. He came to me after a meeting and said, “Let me tell you how AA works. When I first got to AA and it was my wife’s turn to do the dishes and she did not do them, we would fight about it and I would wind up doing the dishes anyway. Then, after a few years went by and it was her turn to do the dishes, I wouldn’t say anything. I would do them, but I’d be upset about it for that day and maybe the next few days without saying a word. And then, after a few more years went by, when it was her turn to do the dishes I would just do them. I wouldn’t be upset, and I would go out and have a wonderful day. That’s how A.A. works.” Let me tell you, he was not kidding: that’s exactly how AA works . . . and happily so!
